For many teenagers, being able to drive would be a dream come true, they envisage driving along the Highway through different states, or venturing off the beaten track a bit down dusty back roads, exploring, going on a road trip with their buddies. For some of this can become reality, and once a drivers licence is obtained they start to plan the rest of their life with this new ability thrown into the mix. No matter how old a driver is, or how long they've held a license, they need to check their vehicle over regularly, and certain checks should be performed before each drive.

Loads of people walk from their front door to their car and get in without once making any checks around the vehicle. It is common sense to look over the tires, check none of them are going flat or damaged, and to check there are no other obvious faults. Drivers usually get used to their own car quite quickly. They grow accustomed to the steering, how the car sounds, how the brakes perform. This means that spotting a problem with a car that is driven regularly can be more straightforward. For example, if the brakes start to feel softer than usual or to make a different noise, the car's owner will know something is not right. In these circumstances it is best to get the vehicle checked by a qualified mechanic. Checking levels of coolant and oil under the hood is something that a car owner can do themselves, and should on a regular basis.

Whenever planning a long journey it is important to make sure the vehicle is in adequate condition. Breaking down in the middle of a road trip can be frustrating, time consuming and even dangerous, especially if brakes fail whilst driving. Having said this, road trips are something that America is known for, people from all over the globe wish they could hit the American highway and see the sights of the different states. Travel books detail good starting points and scenic or historic routes, leading the traveller through mountain ranges, across the plains or along the coast. A great thing about the USA is the diversity of landscapes and climates. Not many countries can boast such a variety. For both foreign travellers and those who live in America, the vast country has a lot to offer. There are numerous places to stop off along the way to learn about American heritage or just to eat some new kinds of food.

When someone has just passed their driving test they are going to be really keen to get out in their car, to enjoy the new found freedom, being able to explore and to give their friends lifts to college, among other things. Not many young new drivers first car is brand new, often they have an old car that was cheap to purchase, or was inherited from a family member. These cars should always be fully vetted before taken out for a spin - the responsibility to do this is the drivers - whether they have just passed their test or not.
