4 Common Sense Tips to Prevent Car Crashes

Submitted by injuryclaims
Mon, 26 May 2008

Sam had a road accident within a week of receiving his driver's license. Fortunately, the only damage was to his car. Not everyone is as lucky. Car crashes are one of the leading causes of unnatural death in the United Kingdom. 52 % of road accidents involve car users. Besides fatalities, car crashes can cause permanent disability and mental trauma.

A majority of road accidents occur because people do not follow the rules or have bad judgement. Here are some tips to prevent car crashes and become a better driver.

Tip 1: Follow the rules
This one is a no-brainer. Traffic rules exist to protect you, not restrict your freedom. Breaking the rules may seem like fun but it's only going to hurt you in the end. Wearing your seatbelt, putting your toddler in a car seat, following traffic signals, etc. are all meant to keep you safe.

Tip 2: Keep to the speed limit
The speed limit is there for a reason. Obey it. The faster you drive, the less control you have over your vehicle. This is what happened in Sam's case. He was speeding, lost control of his car and crashed it into the pavement. Driving fast may seem exciting but it's a sure-fire way to harm yourself and other people.

Tip 3: Be extra-careful at night
Nighttime is when most car crashes occur. The reduced light can test the skills of even the most experienced drivers. As far as possible, avoid driving between the hours of midnight and 6 AM. If you must drive at night, make sure your car indicators, parking lights, and headlights function properly. Too many accidents take place due to faulty lights where a person just didn't see the car coming.

Tip 4: Make sure you have insurance
It is estimated that two million UK drivers don't have insurance. Driving without insurance isn't just irresponsible; it's also a criminal offence. If you have a car accident while uninsured, you could find yourself without a driving license as punishment. Not to mention the money you will have to pay out of your own pocket towards car accident claims. Be a responsible driver. Insure yourself and your car.
