Auto Theft Prevention Tips

Submitted by Simmons

You search up and down the aisles, but to no avail. Your automobile is gone. This scene is replayed throughout the United States every day. If you do not take these precautionary measures, you will find yourself an actor in the "I Am an Auto Theft Victim" play.

You should never leave your car running when you are not in it. Never leave your keys in the car, even if your car is in a garage. Do not put keys in those magnetic spare key boxes. Never leave valuables in plain sight in your car. After your marathon shopping trip, place your packages in your trunk. If you have hatchback, hiding packages in the trunk may be difficult. In this case, you could tint your windows. Be sure to check with your local laws regarding window tinting. Each city has different specifications for tinting. Do not leave your personal documents, such as your drivers license, credit cards, automobile registration, in your car. This not only opens the door to auto theft, but also identity theft.

You can keep your car safer by always parking in well-lit, high traffic areas whenever possible. If your automobile is parked in an area where it's visible, it would make it less attractive to thieves. It may sound simple, but always roll up your windows and lock your car doors. This is a very simple thing, but many people have had their cars stolen because they did not lock their doors or rolled their car windows up. If you use a valet service, only leave the ignition key with the attendant

Consider installing a device that locks the steering wheel, the steering column, the brakes, or a combination of those. It's relatively inexpensive and it's a visible deterrent to auto thief. If you can spend a little more money, invest in a security alarm or theft tracking system. The security alarm system provides a piercing shrill that will draw attention to the thief breaking into your automobile, while the theft tracking system will alert the police department and lead the police right to your vehicle. Since a lot of stolen vehicles end up being sold for parts, it is good to etch the vehicle identification number, or VIN, on the windows, doors, fender, and trunk lid.

Even after all of your hard work in safeguarding your car, your car still could get stolen. Unfortunately, even the most sophisticated devices still will not deter the professional auto thief. You should also keep a copy of your VIN and your license plate number with you at all times. You will need this information for the police in the event that your car is stolen.

You automobile is one of the most expensive investments you will make. Following these simple auto theft prevention tips could help you to hold onto your automobile for an extended time.
