While everyone is inside shopping for family and friends, there are people outside doing some shopping of their own. Police say that there are some things that shoppers can do to help prevent them from getting their car broken into or possible even stolen. Below is a few tips that one may consider to help keep their possessions safe during the holiday season.

It is important to make sure that all valuables are out of sight. If you are going to leave something that is of value in your car, the best place to put it would be the trunk or the glove compartment. You may even consider throwing a coat or blanket over the item in an attempt to fool a thief.

Another big mistake some people make during the shopping season is getting gifts and taking them to your car and them going back for more shopping. This makes it very easy to become a target of theft. It is recommended that if you are going to be doing this, that you take the time to find a different parking space each time you put items in your car as an attempt to thwart thieves.

You should never leave your keys in the car. This goes for running inside the building and leaving your car running for just a couple of minutes. It does not matte how close you park to the building, if someone wants to steal your car, you just gave them an invitation. Another thing that is just as inviting to thief is leaving the car unlocked. Many people make this mistake even when the car is parked inside their own garage or drive way. Once again, it like inviting a thief to steal your car or everything inside. You should never park somewhere you feel uncomfortable. Another things that one may want to do is not use poorly lit ATMs at night or ones that are particularly isolated.

If you happen to become a victim of theft during the holiday season, you should make sure to report the thefts to your local policemen and insurance agent. Make sure that you keep all the receipts and serial numbers from any purchases so the police can track your stolen items. You can request a security escort if you are feeling scared when it comes to leaving the mall to go to your car at night and make sure to lock the car once you are inside.

Thieves are going to strike anytime, anywhere. There are things that one can do to try to keep them and their valuables safe. The most important thing that one can do is to never anything that you are not willing to lose in your car. You should make sure to take anything with you that holds some kind of value along with personal information. Being safe really does use common sense. Try some of these tips during the holiday season and you may be able to keep a thief from stealing from you.
