Car Insurance and Safe Steering

Submitted by Josie Anderson

UK car insurance providers offer varying levels of cover to protect your car against loss or damage. If you compare car insurance policies, you can read the details of different car insurance policies online. This will allow you to check that if you are involved in an accident as a result of steering problems, the cover offered by your car insurance will meet your needs.

Steering problems can lead you to lose control of your vehicle unexpectedly whilst driving, greatly increasing your chances of being involved in an accident. In 2009 there were around 39,000 admissions to hospitals in England resulting from road traffic accidents.[1] If your vehicle is in a crash or collision, you should inform your car insurance provider immediately.

Accidents are sometimes caused by vehicle faults such as ineffective steering systems, which demonstrates the need to deal with any steering concerns as quickly as possible. Steering difficulties can sometimes be caused by faulty steering racks or boxes; however this is not always the case. For example if your car pulls to one side, a dragging brake could perhaps be to blame.

Your tyres could also be a culprit in poor steering. Uneven tyre pressure can lead to steering problems, but the solution can often be relatively straightforward; you simply need to ensure that all of your tyres are inflated to the advised pressure level. Mismatched tyres can cause similar problems, so if you are having difficulty steering, you should check your tyres as a preliminary step before contacting your car mechanic for advice.

If you are involved in a collision, your car insurance should be able to protect you financially. Your car insurance provider will usually choose whether to repair your car or pay you a cash amount equal to the cost of the loss or damage. If the car cannot be driven because of damage that is covered under your car insurance policy, they may pay for the car to be taken to your nearest approved repairer or provide you with a courtesy car.

A fully functioning steering system should ensure that you feel safe, confident and in control when driving. Not only will this greatly improve the safety of you and other road users, it should make your drive more enjoyable too.
