Car Insurance and Windscreens

Submitted by Josie Anderson
Thu, 28 Apr 2011

If your windscreen breaks, your car insurance company should pay the cost of repairing or replacing it within the period of insurance. Please be aware that you'll still need to pay the excess if the windscreen is replaced. Good car insurance companies may even pay to repair damaged bodywork as a result of broken glass.

You should contact your car insurance company to find out who they recommend to repair a windscreen in your area, as this may mean you have an unlimited amount of cover for the repair. If you don't use a recommended windscreen fitter, you may find that you are only eligible to receive up to £100 reimbursement after the excess.

Under a comprehensive car insurance policy, all insurers provide cover for damaged or broken windscreens. However some companies offer the added bonus that if you opt to repair your windscreen - rather than totally replacing it - you do not have to pay the excess. Repair will therefore be more cost effective and time effective for you getting back on the road again.

You should also check with your insurance provider to find out how replacing or repairing your windscreen affects your no claims discount. With reputable car insurance providers you should find that your no claims discount is not affected by any claims for your windscreen.

What isn't covered?

The cost of importing parts or accessories when they are not available in the UK is not usually covered under your car insurance policy. Any storage costs during the repair process will also not usually be covered and neither will the cost of loss of usage of your car. If you are concerned about these issues, you can speak to your car insurance provider to understand the terms and conditions of your policy.

You are recommended to treat damage to your windscreen as soon as possible. If you have some damage to your windscreen, such as a small scratch or a crack, you should contact your insurance company to check whether your windscreen needs replacing or repairing. The sooner you fix the problem, the more cost effective you could find repairing the damage is.

A clear, unblemished windscreen is essential for good car safety. With good car insurance and the right information about the state of your windscreen, you will then be able to drive safely on the road.
