Immobilizer

Submitted by Sangeetha Mohandass

In Washington each year, more than 8,000 Auto Mobiles are been stolen and very less than 70% of the cars are been recovered. Thousands of people have already been the victims of these car thefts. How could you go to work, or to school, or to the doctor, or to the shops, without your car? What if your car was discovered but badly under a much damaged condition and just thinks about the extensive repairs you have to spend for it?

Recently almost all the Government’s in the world are telling the public to launch Immobilizer in their vehicles. However, research shows that the installation of an engine immobilizer into any vehicle can greatly reduce the risk of drivers becoming a victim of this predominately opportunistic type of crime. That is why an immobilizer still remains one of the most effective ways to secure your automobiles.

An immobilizer is an automotive electronic device, which automatically shuts down essential systems in your car (such as the ignition, fuel pump, starter circuit or engine management system) so that it cannot be driven away powered by its own engine.

If your car has Immobilizer fixed, it’ll make it much harder for people to steal your car. The immobilizer will refuse to start the engine unless a password or a key is detected. If a thief wants to rob your car, he'll start the car using a duplicate key, but the cars that is having the immobilizer are much harder to start without a key

There are many types of immobilizers to choose from. It's a good idea to shop around for one which best suits your needs and to ask for a demonstration before you buy. Remember to ensure that the device is Government approved. All Government approved immobilizers are self-arming.

You can reduce the chances of your older car becoming a statistic by installing an immobilizer. Ask your insurance company if they offer a reduced premium when an approved immobilizer is fitted. As the number of cars protected by immobilizers’ increases, the rate of car thefts drops.
Numerous different Immobilizers have been used for different models of vehicles and different years with different procedures to fix them.

The apparatus of the Immobilizer system requires special steps for replacement include the keys, the Instrument Cluster and Engine controller (ECU). The latest development is the “Finger Print Immobilizer”, which uses the driver’s finger print as the key. This immobilizer has a dashboard mounted touchpad that will scan your finger print to allow the car to start. When the driver or the owner gets into the car they have to place their finger on to the touchpad. On identifying the correct fingerprint, the car is then ready for drive. The touch pad doesn’t recognize a print, the car will remain immobilized.

The other features that are available in the Finger Print Immobilizer are it can store up to 10 fingerprints in its memory so that every one in a family can use the car. And the Car owner can add or delete any individual fingerprint from its memory. It also has the hibernation mode feature, that is, when it’s armed it doesn’t accumulate any power from the car battery. Hence it also saves the battery of your car. It also supports an easy access to valet mode for normal key start operation.
