Mercedes CL 65 AMG: in Depth

Submitted by Dwyane

One of Mercedes Benz’s greatest offers this year is the CL 65 AMG.

The car has a twelve-cylinder bi-turbo engine that features the most recent technology from the motor sport world. IT is also guaranteed that this latest offing from Mercedes Benz will surely have only top of the line auto parts like Mercedes pressure plates – only the best that the German automaker has to offer.

Even at extreme temperatures, the Mercedes CL 65 AMG has consistent high power and torque levels because of its assured performance quality parts and materials. These include precision-balanced crankshaft that is made up of high-strength materials, forged pistons made up of special materials which are extremely resistant to temperature and pressure, and a more efficient oil spray cooling system with a separate individual nozzle for each piston. Added features are the larger piston pins and the main and big-end bearings which are also made up of a refined grade material so that temperature and pressure peaks will work more effectively.

Due to optimized combustion chambers and longer opening times of the intake valves, the charge cycle in the cylinder heads flows smoothly. Even under extremely difficult conditions, all lubrication points must be supplied with oil. And this is made possible by a modified oil pump. Integrated into the AMG front apron is the engine oil cooler. It has an added engine coolant radiator that is located in the arch of the wheel.

A 70 percent lager low -temperature radiator in the front of the vehicle is an added feature as the charge-air cooler has been innovated. An air-to-water heat exchanger principle is applied on the air cooler system. This, in effect, yields efficient cooling of the intake air that has been compressed by the turbochargers before it gets inside the chambers of combustion. A 25 per cent decrease in intake temperature at full throttle and a guaranteed high power and torque output under all operating conditions and regardless of the outside temperature is the result of the car’s increased surface area of the low-temperature radiator. A maximum pressure charge of 1.5 bar is yielded due to the housings of the compressor and turbine in both turbochargers as well as in the enlarged turbine and compressor wheels.

Mercedes CL 65 AMG’s fuel supply is electronically controlled. It has newly developed parts that operate with a variable system pressure between 3.6 and 5.0 bar. In accordance with the power requirements and outside temperature, fuel pressure is regulated freakishly and immediately. The car also has an engine management system that translates the command from the accelerator as fast as a wink of an eye. Consequently, this results to an intensely fast response from the engine in all load conditions.

The car further features the AMG sports exhaust system with two twin chromed tailpipes in the exclusive AMG V12 design that assures quality AMG twelve-cylinder sound. Providing a faster response from a cold start, more efficient exhaust-gas after treatment and a longer life span are tri-metallic coated catalytic converters.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT 5-speed automatic transmission with AMG gearshift paddles and DIRECT SELECT gearshift transmits the drive power of the new CL 65 AMG to the wheels.

Mercedes drivers can choose among three driving modes by pressing the "S/C/M" button in the center console. These driving modes are the "Sport", "Comfort" and "Manual". These change the transmission characteristics and modify the accelerator response and the spring/damper settings of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control. Silver-colored aluminum shift paddles on the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel manually shift the gears.
Plus, Mercedes costumers need not to worry because the CL 65 AMG complies with the EU 4 emissions standard as well as specific requirements of the US market.
