Purchasing a car is a huge step and large investment for most people. One of the greatest drawbacks to buying any car is that they quickly decrease in value because which each and every mile driven the car is slightly deteriorating. As the car begins to deteriorate car maintenance can quickly become an issue. The best way to get the maximum use out of your car is to pay attention to the maintenance that is needed. In order to cut down on the cost of constantly taking your car to the shop there are a few things that every car owner can manage as long as they have the proper tools and car maintenance knowledge.

An important part of maintaining your car that many car owners can forget is the oil change. So many car owners put off getting the oil changed in their car for various reasons. The oil should be changed in your car each and every 3,000 miles without fail. Failure to change the oil in your car can lead to expensive car repairs later. If you do not like the idea of paying your local automatic ever few months you can always learn how to change the oil yourself from a friend or even a community college class. A few small auto repair shops are willing to teach an interested person for a small free or, if you are a repeat customer, for free.

When you are ready to change your car oil yourself make sure you have all of the proper equipment. If you do learn from a friend or a car repair shop make sure that you have all the tools that you see in the shop. Do not take it for granted that you have those things lying around the house or you could end up in an awkward situation halfway through an oil change. Make sure that you have an oil wrench for removing the oil filter and also a good funnel to make things easier

If you are interested in learning to handle car maintenance yourself you must make sure that you have a jack and jack stand. Usually your car needs to be elevated to be repaired so having these tools are essential. Having a jack and a little know how will make it possible for you to rotate your tires yourself and perform other small repairs on your car. Also having a good jack and jack stands can be a great help if you ever find yourself on the side of the road with a flat tire. There is nothing worse than having to wait for assistance to change a tire just because you can’t lift your car up yourself.

When tackling car repairs and car maintenance make sure you have some things handy to help with clean up and keep from making a mess. A good funnel can be useful for more things than changing oil so keep funnels handy that are set aside solely for car repair and maintenance use. Also having a bucket to catch and fluids is a good idea. Some people will let fluids run out on their garage floor or driveway not realizing that even hosing the fluids away won’t always clean up everything.

There are always going to be those times when you can’t always avoid making a mess or having an accident so be prepared. Have some rags or durable towels handy to clean up spills or other messes. Also keep a first aid kit handy in case of other accidents like small cuts or bruises. Being able to quickly clean up a mess or cut will keep you from getting discouraged with the home car maintenance situations.
