Should You Purchase a Used Car or a New Car

Submitted by kelloyd

It is the age-old question that has been asked for years, “Should I buy a Used Car or a New Car?” The answer is not an easy one because it depends upon who is asking the question. So, we will layout the pro and cons of each approach and let you decide which is the right decision for you. We will look at the question from the value and warranty aspects of the car purchase.

Value

The value category generally favors the Used Car purchase. The value of a new car drops by 20 to 30% after it is driven off the new car lot, so when you purchase a used car the resell value is greater than if you would have purchased a new car. So if you are planning to resell the car in the future, the used car holds the most promise for you. However, if you are buying a car to impress someone with the latest new model than the used car wins again in the value category, because often you can find the latest models being offered as used car mega deals. These cars can sometimes be found in the same year as the new vehicle with a used car price, offering lucky finders the latest car model with the reduced used car price. You can often find these bargains in the local classifieds and craigslist websites.

Warranty

You would think that the warranty category would most definitely favor the new car with the common 10 year/100,000 mile warranty found on several cars in today’s market however, that is not necessarily so. When you purchase a used car the warranty may transfer to you, thereby giving you the reduced cost of purchasing a used car with the remaining time on the warranty being transferred to you. A used car owner will sometimes have the ability to purchase a warranty for the used car as an add on to the purchase of the used car.

In the future we will take a look at the “Should I buy a Used Car or a New Car” question from the Customization and Maintenance viewpoints.
