Staying Safe Behind the Wheel

Whenever we hear of a friend, family member or co-worker that's been in an automotive accident, while of course feeling sympathy, we always think "Oh, that will never happen to me, I'm a good driver." Unfortunately, that is not the case because car accidents take two cars meaning that the other driver may not be as reliable for their driving skills. It is important to always be aware and realize that the possibility of getting into an accident is there whenever you're driving anywhere at anytime. Here are a few simple tips to help keep yourself and anyone who may be in the car with you, safe.

Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous and has devastating results. Secondly, and we all do it, refrain from talking and more importantly texting while driving. If you're constantly on the phone and just can't manage to get where you need to go without being on your cell phone, than its time to invest in a earpiece. It's important to have both hands on the wheel and ready to react to any predetermined road interferences. Keeping your hands free also includes no eating, reading a book or newspaper and for you ladies, applying makeup while driving.

If children are riding in the vehicle with you, it becomes even more important to keep safety first in your mind. Be sure that any child under the age of 8 and/or less than 80 pounds is safely secured in either a car seat or a booster seat. Infants should always face towards the back of the car and if the car seat will be remaining in the car for an extended period of time, it might be wise to take your vehicle to a local fire department to make sure everything has been properly secured. While children can easily get bored in the car, its important not to give them small toys and/or food while in the car as it can be a choking hazard.

Last, but not least, always remember to buckle up. If something does unexpectedly happen while you are driving, it is important to stay calm. If you're excited and jump to reactions, you can endanger not only your life but others around you. Staying calm helps you to stay focused and make the best judgment. Good luck and stay safe!
