The Correct Steps Of Performing Clutch Cable Replacement

Submitted by joalesto

Clutch cables are mechanisms that provide a break between the wheels and the engine. A clutch cable serves as a means to allow you to shift gears without having to shut the engine off. In this case, the engine spins continuously but the wheels stop turning. A faulty clutch cable makes clutch pedal hard to press down. A faulty cable also causes the pedal to get stuck on the floor without returning to its normal place.

An annoying problem experienced by many motorists is failure of clutch cables. If you are in a hurry, this problem can be much of a hassle. Nevertheless, every motorcycle or automobile owner has experienced this problem at least once. It can be troublesome, especially if you are stuck in the middle of the road. While you may dread the thought of it, the truth is that these cables are prone to wear over time and they can snap off all of a sudden.

You can avoid such problems from arising. A reliable method to avoid such hassle is to regularly check your vehicle. One thing you should check is whether the cable is secured right to the clutch lever. There is a high risk of the cable breaking off if it is stretched a lot. But there are instances when you really have no choice but to replace the cable. Replacement, however, is an off-putting task. You need the right tools and, of course, the technical know-how.

If you are replacing clutch cables, you need screwdriver set, socket set, combination wrench set, and socket wrench. You have to find the adjustment nut and then loosen it using a screwdriver. Afterwards, take off the bolts which grip the cable in place. You also need to loosen the lock nut on the clutch lever cable adjuster and tighten it so that it rests next to the clutch lever perch. The cable grooves in the adjuster should be aligned with the clutch cable grooves. Gently take away the end barrel of the cable from the clutch lever and pull out the cable. You may also need to remove the clutch cover to access the motor end adjuster. The adjuster should then be turned clockwise to completely unbolt it. After that, carefully pull the cable through the frame and handle bars.

What follows, of course, is the installation of the new cable. Remember that installation of new clutch cables requires lubrication. You should tighten the mid cable adjuster properly and then carefully set the cable end barrel in place. Afterwards, screw the adjuster in position. Direct the cable to the clutch lever perch, making sure you don't miss any nut. Also, make sure that all nuts are tightened during the installation of the new cable. Slip the cable through the grooves and then tighten the cable adjuster, but you need to leave the lock fastening loose. This time, turn the mid cable adjuster counterclockwise to make adjustments and tighten the lock nut properly. During the process you may need to remove the clutch plate. If you did, put it back in place. As you notice, installation of new cables follows the reverse pattern of removal of old cables.

You are almost done but there is one more thing left to do. Well, you need to inspect the mechanism to find out if it is working properly. Then again, the steps given in this article can be overwhelming for someone without background in automotive technology. For someone without technical skills, this can be hard. While you can purchase clutch cables from suppliers, you should not attempt to remove the worn cable and install a new one if you don't have the skill. A qualified technician should do the job for you.
