Driving Courses Available For Learner Drivers

Submitted by veronicajewell

To reflect the differing needs of those needing or wanting to learn how to drive, many driving schools now offer a range of different ways and programmes of driving tuition. Here is an outline of some of the more common courses that most major driving schools offer:

Regular driving lessons for absolute beginners
Majority of the time, learners go to driving schools to learn how to drive for the first time. Some of the things you can expect to learn include basic driving on the road and in different weather conditions as well as a range of maneuvers including three-point turns, emergency stops and parallel parking or parking in a bay. For absolute beginners, most instructors usually recommend taking no more than 2 to 3 lessons a week, of 1 to 2 hours in duration, and learning over a period of months rather than days or weeks.

Intensive driving courses
However, for those that need to pass their driving test as quickly as possible, many schools now offer what they call an intensive driving course. These driving courses are designed to give you intense training across a short period of time allowing you to theoretically gain and practice all the necessary driving skills.

Sometimes you can become a good driver and pass in as little as one week's time and others over a month. However the pass rate for these types of courses is generally lower than those spaced our over a longer period of time. These courses can also teach you a certain level of hazard perception and theory so that you can pass the theory test in a similar timeframe. These types of courses usually ask for a flat rate fee of a couple of hundred pounds or more depending on the course you go for and the school you choose to go with as prices vary with the school.

A mock practical driving exam
The practical driving exam can be very stressful and nerve racking for some people to take regardless of confidence or age. For this reason, many schools allow you to take a mock practical driving exam in which they will assess you on all things that a practical examiner would look to assess you on and what to expect on the real big day.

Your instructor will run this session in the same way a practical examiner would, which is roughly a 40-50 minutes driving session with some theoretical and practical questions about your car. This session generally alerts you to some of the flaws in your own driving allowing you instructor to pin-point certain areas that you could look to brush up on.
