EPA and Mercedes-Benz on the SCR Diesel Guidelines

Submitted by Dwyane
Wed, 4 Apr 2007

Recently, the EPA has released an announcement with regards SCR diesel guidelines. To this announcement the top car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz responded positively. They openly welcomed and they proclaimed their support for the EPA’s move on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR - The SCR is a process where gaseous or liquid reductant is added to the exhaust gas stream and is absorbed onto the catalyst) guidelines.

The manufacturer, through Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management DaimleyChrysler and Head of the Mercedes Car Group said that the action of EPA, “…represents a critical next step for the future acceptance of diesel vehicles in the U.S. market. This decision, teamed with the Agency’s recent mandate for Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel availability, serve to reinforce diesel’s benefit as a viable alternative to help reduce fuel consumption and ultimately, reduce oil imports.”

The Mercedes-Benz car company is said to be the pioneer of advanced diesel technology and introduced the world’s first diesel passenger car. Up until now, they continuously revolutionize the industry with the clean, quiet and powerful next-generation diesel engines.

One of these is the E320 BLUETEC, which still carries in it the important car parts like the Mercedes head gasket. This is the only diesel-powered luxury sedan in the U.S., delivering an estimated 780 miles on one tank of fuel. The technology incorporated in the BLUETECH reduces emissions and thus makes it safer for the environment. Another is the GL320 CDI SUV together with some other SUVs, ML320 CDI SUV and the R320 CDI SUV which are all 4-wheel drive and are the only diesel vehicles in their class.
