Different than other types of fuel, diesel fuel has the disadvantage of being adversely affected by cold weather conditions. It's viscosity increases as it's temperature decreases, forming a gel that causes flow problems and clogs up fuel filters. Most diesel engines are found in the tractor trailers used for commercial shipping and transportation. These trucks often travel in cold weather conditions, especially those experienced in the northern regions during the severe winter months. As external temperatures decrease and diesel fuel temperatures follow, it's viscosity, or thickness, dramatically increases. This causes no start and hard start conditions as well as starving the engine of fuel which can lead to many other mechanical problems. A fuel additive known as a can help diminish this occurrence by lowering the cloud points of diesel fuel. Diesel fuel additives increase engine performance in a number of ways. They can enhance the lubrication of internal parts, protect against oxidation, and inhibit metal corrosion. The additives promote the flow of diesel fuel in extreme cold conditions by dissipating wax crystals before they can clog fuel components such as fuel filters and injectors. They also lower cloud points for diesel fuels allowing these trucks to operate properly in lower temperature conditions. These additives can be used in all types of diesel fuel including #1 diesel, #2 diesel, and all bio-diesels. A traditional solution to cold flow problems in the past was to use #1 diesel fuel which is diluted with kerosene. This mixture only produces 95% of the horsepower and fuel economy of #2 diesel fuels costing the consumer money in the long run. additives accomplish these tasks while promoting increased fuel economy and horsepower.
