Motorbike insurance premiums are significantly influenced by the occurrence of accidents and driving infractions. Many accidents occur as a result of mechanical failure or improper motorbike maintenance. Therefore it is advisable to take some time and conduct basic motorbike maintenance and checks prior to heading out on your motorbike. Taking these extra steps can help insure a safer motorbiking experience for you as well as a safer one for other motorists on the road.

Checking your oil prior to your departure is always advisable. Oil is best checked when the engine is cold. When checking oil, not only are you determining its level but there are some other qualities to observe. Notice the colour of your oil. Does it look out of the ordinary? Changes in the color of your motorbike's oil can indicate problems. Also, the viscosity of the oil is another sign. Does it look runnier than usual or is it thicker than normal? Also, inspect the area around your motorbike for any visible leaks or pools of motor oil.

You want to check your battery. Make sure the terminals are clear of any corrosion. Also, check your headlights and taillights to ensure proper operation. Motorbikes need to have a concerted effort to make sure other motorists can see them. Without working headlights or taillight, this compounds this problem. Also make sure your turn signal lights are working properly.

Adequate tire pressure can make your motorbike ride much safer. Take the time to check your tires using an air pressure gauge. You will obtain the most accurate reading when the tires are cool. Therefore checking the pressure prior to setting out is the perfect time. Observe any changes in the tread of your tire or anything possibly lodged within the tire tread.

Brakes are another part of your motorbike that should be inspected prior to your departure. Having working brakes can often save you from potentially dangerous situations. Check to make sure the surface on the brakes is still adequate. If they appear to be wearing thin, it may be time to have them replaced. These steps just might save your life.
