Motorcycle License - The Steps Involved In Getting One

Submitted by leclaims

Before a motorcyclists can legally operate a motorcycle in public, he or she must get a motorcycle license. Riders may choose to get a motorcycle permit before the license, which will allow them to operate in public with certain restrictions. The following information contains the necessary steps for obtaining the motorcycle license.

The first step is to get the motorcycle permit which is essentially a temporary license that allows you to ride a motorcycle on public roads. You can obtain a permit by signing up for the short exam that you are required to pass. The permit test contains general questions about motorcycle operation and safety.

There is a 6 month window during which the permit is valid so the rider will want to use the time to either study for the written test and rider test, or take a rider safety course instead of the written and rider tests. 6 months is typically more than enough time for most to get the experience they need.

Taking the written test is the first step that one must take towards getting the motorcycle license. There are a number of questions that are related to motorcycle driving techniques as well as situational questions. There will also be a good amount of safety related questions. The information being tested on usually can be found in the motorcycle rider manual that is filed with the state.

The actual testing must be scheduled with the motor vehicle department in your area, which is where the written and rider tests will be administered. The rider test will be conducted by a motor vehicle department official who will follow behind the rider on another motorcycle or in a car.

If the rider passes both tests, then the rider will get the motorcycle license and will be free to ride on public roadways as he or she pleases. If either the written test or the skills test is not passed, the that portion will have to be taken over again and passed before the license will be granted.

The motorcycle safety course is one alternative that riders have to taking the written and skills exams. The course teaches important operating skills and helps to increase safety awareness. Upon successful completion of the safety course, the motorcycle license will be granted.
