Should Service Help You Decide?

Submitted by henry007

When you call the other person's insurance company you talk to a knowledgeable representative who is helpful and answers all of your questions. However when you talk to your insurance company you are treated coldly, do not get any answers to your questions, and it takes your company days just to return your call so you can report the incident. You are saving a lot of money every month on lower cost car insurance, but is it really worth it?

Most of the time the only opinion we have of our car insurance is how much it costs us every month, and how much we are saving compared to other companies. It happens that every few months you have a question about your insurance, and either your agent answers it for you or you get decent response from your company's customer service department. But the real measure of good customer service for a car insurance company is when you really need them after an accident. Your car is in the shop, you are low on funds to fix it, and you need your car insurance to come through for you. When your company fails to be there for you, suddenly that money you are saving seems to disappear into rental cars and body shops.

Customer service is something very subjective. Some people may dislike the level of service offered by a particular company, while others are quite happy with the service they get. The best way to judge customer service is to take a look at what other customers are saying either in person or on the Internet. Take your time in deciding on what new company to go with, and make sure you ask a lot of people a lot of questions. Take some time to sit down with different local insurance agents and gauge how they make you feel. If you feel confident in one particular company, then call their claims department and see what the procedure is like. If you get put on hold repeatedly, or you get a rude person, then maybe you need to re-think doing business with that company.

Saving money is important, but getting good service when you need it the most may wind up being more important. Look around for the right insurance company for you, and base your decision more on service than on price. Examine what services are being offered, and make sure you compare details between various companies to make sure you are comparing similar policies. It is hoped that it does not take the experience of an auto accident to help you decide on a new insurance company, but it is experiences like that which can really show you what to expect from the customer service department at an insurance company. Never underestimate the impression made by someone else's insurance company when you are asking them for help.
