Advertising really got going in the Nineteenth Century, although there were indications of it before that. Ancient Rome had the first advertising that was made obvious, when the gladiators in the coliseum were advertised. However, that kind of advertising didn't really catch on, and it took a long time before advertising became commonplace. Most advertising grew rapidly after the war, when television came about. It was such a new medium, and everyone was fascinated by it, so advertisers took advantage of that. They knew people would be watching, and even when the show was over they would watch the commercials because it was something to watch, so they capitalized on that and advertised all kinds of things. People would pay good money to have their products shown on television because they could be viewed by so many more people that way, and advertisers really started to make money. From that point, advertising became a bigger business and started to grow more rapidly, because television really did change everything.

The costs for advertising have changed a lot, too, since television first gave advertising a big boost. Now a commercial aired during the super bowl, for example, can cost millions of dollars. That would have been unheard of when television was in its infancy.

Advertising is here to stay, though, and there's always going to be people who will pay more for it so that they can get their name and their product out there to people. With that in mind, advertising has moved to the Internet, where most people pay surprisingly little to get their name and product in front of millions of people. They are usually very interested in things like social networking, because having profiles on those sites is free. They don't pay to have expensive TV commercials, but they have the potential to reach more people. The difference is that those people have to be searching for what they are selling as opposed to just watching their television. Still, though, the possibilities for advertising on the Internet are almost endless, and that means that people who aren't sure that they have the money to start up a business and advertise a product are finding that they actually might be able to do it after all. It's good for commerce, and it's good for other people, too, who need and want the products that individuals and companies have to offer.
