Don’t Let Bad Digital Photos Ruin Your CatalogsSubmitted by charen Thu, 19 Feb 2009
What makes catalog printing very effective is the multitude of photos and images found in your print catalogs. In fact, many catalog printing campaigns are successful precisely because target readers have been attracted to the photos found in them.
That’s why it is not acceptable for photos and graphic images to turn bad in your print catalogs. Indeed, it’s downright inexcusable for your photos and illustrations to not be the way you expect them to be. Sadly but true, many catalog printing companies are less than able to process photo files. Often, mistakes are made during the conversion of files from the original to CMYK. Instead of making it easier to print catalogs, the process of converting your photo files can do more damage. What’s even more frustrating is that these providers would go to the extent to try to fix things, and yet add to the problem in the process. By the time anybody can correct the mistakes, it is too late. This is the good news. There are many digital photographers who can supply you with quality digital photos so you can have great images in your print catalogs. To further help your photo provider to get the exact image you expect, here are some suggestions: Ask your digital photo provider for - 1- FPO images and the original raw files. 2- RGB tiff images with proper tags so your print provider can create results that are the similar to the original. 3- CMYK tiff and color separations if available. Color separations taken from raw camera files can make it easier for your print provider to apply their own settings. Look for print providers that have skilled and knowledgeable staff that knows how to handle digital photos – There are three basic things that your print provider should know: (1) basic principles in color management; (2) the impact of modern hardware-calibrated displays; and (3) the proper way to handle digital photos. When you find these people, they can help you with things such as applying the right color temperature, providing white balance, and how to work with RGB even if you’re using LAB and CMYK. Finally, ask for help – Experts and skilled providers are plenty to help you with what you need. You only need to ask. If you really want to have an effective catalog printing for your business, hiring an expert to provide you with quality photos can go a long way.
