Making Better DessertsSubmitted by neillisa Wed, 3 Jun 2009
It's no secret that desserts are the biggest draw at any meal. Who doesn't want to finish off their meal with a hearty ice cream or slice of cake? The problem is that they're not just unhealthy; they also tend to get dull and uninspired after a while. When you're having the same dessert every day, it just doesn't seem all that special. One way to change that is to get creative and make your own dessert recipes.
It doesn't have to be a big change or a whole recipe altogether. Sometimes a little twist can make the old favorites taste entirely new. For example, you can take your favorite ice cream and top it with fresh fruit, drizzle on some honey, or mix it with a different flavor. It won't always turn out good, but it's fun to experiment and you just might come up with a new hit. If you're more of a cake and cookies person, you may want to try cupcakes for your next meal. Cupcakes are cheaper and easier to make than cakes, but offer just as much flavor. The best thing about them is that they're fun to decorate. Even with some plain frosting and a few candy pieces, you can make a professional-looking cupcake that's sure to impress your friends and family. On a diet? You don't have to deprive your sweet tooth just to shave off a few pounds. Try having fruit-based desserts like cobbler or apple crumble, or better yet, finish off your meals with fresh whole fruits. Spring's just starting, so many fruits are in season-take it as an opportunity to discover new fruits and find new favorites. Of course, it won't hurt to indulge once in a while with a homemade fruit fondue or fruit-topped ice cream. The only rule to remember when making dessert is to keep up the variety. After all, part of the fun is looking forward to that part of the meal. You can serve cake one day, fruits the next, and something else the next day. By keeping a good balance of flavors, you keep your family interested and even make them more open to discovering new tastes.
Making your own desserts can be a challenge, but the results are often more than worth it. Here are some ways to jazz up your desserts and make it the best part of every meal.
