Understanding the Culture of Your Industry

Submitted by cheesynic

Every industry is going to have certain events where the people in it gather. These might be seminars, they might be events hosted by one company or another, or they might be some kind of a tradeshow. No matter what the event itself is, you'll likely be surrounded by a lot of different people from your industry that you'll be interacting with and trying to generate business from them.

A very important thing to take note of, especially for those who are new to their industry or don't go to a lot of events like these, is that every industry will have certain standards for the way they interact with each other.

These kinds of rules will likely extend to your business card printing as well. Print business cards are often a reflection of the interaction people typically have with one another. In industries where people are more formal, so are the business cards, just like with casual industries you start seeing more colorful business cards or other forms of custom designs.

Now, I'm not trying to scare people into thinking that there is this specific society with rigid rules they need to be aware of, but merely pointing out something to keep your eyes open for, because if you don't understand the right way to interact within your industry you might end up wasting time or money on things that simply won't work, and harming your image in the long run.

Of course, for some industries you might have quite a bit of flexibility, and for others doing something different from everyone else might very well be exactly what you need to show you're different and improve your image in the eyes of a lot of people there.

Yes, I'm aware what I'm suggesting might seem to an extent contradictory. How can you spend your time making sure your business card printing is right for your particular market, while at the same time doing something new and interesting in order to surprise people?

You can't, but what you can do is be aware of what your market likes, and from there better prepare yourself for how people react, and better gauge what the best way will be to make sure that your marketing will be successful. You might notice another company who tried something different and had very poor results. This might be enough to prove doing the same would be ineffective, but at the same time you might notice the very opposite, and seize on the moment to try out something different yourself to make your company more prominent.

You can't know how to buck the trend and be successful if you aren't aware of what the trend is. Each industry is unique and yours will dictate exactly how you act, and what will work best.
