I have a secret to tell you – I like the artificial flowers on my desk. Why should this surprise you – well most people would describe my office decor as sparse. I don't really have to time to work at decorating. Outside of a picture of my spouse and 2 kids, there's really not much there. About 6 months ago some one put an artificial orchid flower on my desk. The flower was easy, take it out of the box, put it on the desk. It took about 10 seconds. The plant is already in a pot so there was not much work here.
I work in front of a computer all day long so my day is pretty much filled by a computer. I have a picture of Cataract Lake, a picturesque lake in Colorado as my desktop picture but I rarely see this because I have applications open. While I am working, the orchid catches my eye. Because it's artificial, it's always and bloom and it looks real. I keep it near the window even though I know it does not need the sun, it just looks so real that it makes me think it should be in the sun.
So while my desk is sparse except for the papers that I occasionally have littered across it, the orchid now takes up some of the space and I have never missed the space.
As a matter of fact, I liked the artificial flowers so much that I got an arrangement of Gerbera daisies for a conference table I have. To be honest, if I am using the table, I almost always move the flowers, but I like the flowers there for when I am not using the table. It just looks better.
So here's a couple tips for you when selecting artificial flowers for your work space. First and foremost don't overwhelm the space. You don't want a piece that will startle people. Second, make sure it won't be in the way. There is nothing worse than having obstacles that keep you from getting work done (that is why I move the daisies). Lastly, make sure that you get something you like, don't buy something just because it's a good deal.
Artificial Flowers can be purchased in an arranged or potted form or as stems. If you want to match your décor best, buy a vase and then fill it with the flowers you like. If you are like me and don't have much time, go ahead and buy something that is ready to go. A light dusting is all these really need, and like all décor items, update every so often.
