Many people would happily refer to B&Bs as a British institution but before we begin it would be useful to clarify what is a Bed and Breakfast? When trying to envisage a Bed and Breakfast" all sorts of images can be conjured up; from the wayward traveller looking for a warm bed for the night before continuing his travels in the morning, to those looking for a little home from home luxury. Wikipedia provides the following definition A bed and breakfast (or B&B) is a small lodging establishment that offers overnight accommodation and breakfast, but usually does not offer other meals."
As a large and established industry Bed and Breakfasts make a significant and valuable contribution to the UK economy, The Bed and Breakfast Association states that 1.7 billion is spent staying at B&Bs by just UK residents alone (ie excluding incoming tourists)." One English region which has a thriving Bed and Breakfast community is Milton Keynes, with a huge number of B&Bs of varying styles and prices to suit every traveller.
Bed and breakfast establishments have been transformed over the last few decades. As well as individual businesses carrying out upgrades and refurbishments, many have also adopted an online presence. From Mr and Mrs Bloggs who use their spare rooms as a B&B to the high end luxury bed and breakfast, you will be able to find a number of them on the World Wide Web. Some establishments are lucky enough to have their own website, others have found that having listing on B&B directories such as MK Web Accommodation Guide to be very successful.
For the industry this is fantastic news, embracing technology to drive business forward. However, how do B&B's ensure that their target audience can find their site? It's not as simple as search engine optimisation and pay per click. Why not? To begin with what terms will people use whilst searching on the internet for a Bed and Breakfast? Is it bed and breakfast", bed and breakfasts", B&Bs" BandB" or BandBs"? If we ran a competition on how many different ways you could search for Bed and Breakfasts online then it would be along the same lines as the traditional game how many sweets are in the jar?" From the singular bed and breakfast to the plural, even bed and breakfast accommodation", the slightly shorter bed & breakfast", the even shorter b&b", b & b", b&b's",. Then there is the slightly more unusual bnb" or bb".
Some internet surfers who are looking for a specific experience may even use the following terms farmhouse bed and breakfast" or family bed and breakfast" or a specific geographical area bed and breakfast milton keynes". This will enable them to get more specific results for their search. So, if you have a farmhouse you run as a family bed and breakfast in Milton Keynes, you could hope to appear in all of the results!
