GE Oil & Gas technology supporting and develop Gorgon, one of the world's largest untapped natural gas fields, creates oil and Gas Jobs

Australia has found itself at the centre of a renaissance in the oil industry, as one of its biggest refinement projects looks set to yield more oil than was originally anticipated.

What is the Gorgon Project?

The Gorgon Project, operated by the Australian subsidiary of the Chevron Group, was formed to research and refine one of the world's largest untapped natural gas fields. GE Oil and Gas were chosen to support the project, supplying Chevron with Liquid Natural Gas refrigeration and carbon dioxide reinjection components in a contract worth an estimated $400million. However, the Gorgon Project has also undertaken the task of developing the newly discovered Greater Gorgon gas fields. GE Oil and Gas has once again been chosen to support this extension of the project, meeting the requirements of the extra power generation needed for the liquefaction and gas treatment facilities to be installed on Barrow Island.

The new contract signed by GE Oil and Gas seals their commitment to undertake work alongside Chevron for at least the next five years. In this time, they will be supplying three Main Refrigerant Compression Trains used to transport 15 million tons of Liquid Natural Gas per year, and supply a further six Compression Trains that will be used in the sequestration of carbon dioxide. Claudi Santiago, President and CEO of GE Oil & Gas said: "I am delighted that GE Oil & Gas has been selected by Chevron to deliver this technologically complex project, which will deliver cleaner energy on an unprecedented scale. The contract consolidates our global LNG technology leadership position and our competitive edge in pioneering CO2 sequestration applications. Gorgon demonstrates our customer commitment to Innovation Now solutions based on safe and reliable technology transfer and our partnership role in milestone projects shaping the future of world energy".

How Will this Affect the Job-Market?

Whilst this decision obviously has a hugely positive impact on the world's supply of Liquid Natural Gas, it also identifies Australia as a hotspot for those seeking oil jobs and gas jobs. In order to meet the demands of their contract, GE Oil and Gas will have to undertake a massive oil recruitment drive - and this won't just be for short-term oil jobs and gas jobs. Frontline crew and staff getting involved in the Gorgon Project can expect to climb the ladder within the Project's framework and aspire to long-term oil careers and gas careers.

In addition to the bulk of the main Gorgon Project, GR Oil and Gas's commitments will now extend to supporting the work being carried out in the offshore Gorgon and Jansz fields. This will involve the supply, installation and maintenance of twenty subsea ‘trees' (used to control and manage the production of gas from subsea wells), twenty VectoGray wellhead systems, production control systems (used to maintain and research the subsea infrastructure) and five pipeline termination systems, the total of which will amount to around 10,000 tons of subsea structures.

While traditional gas jobs will be plentiful, the extension of the Gorgon Project will also have a further effect on the employment market. Because the Project is using new and developing technologies and equipment, Australia is likely to be the centre for the creation of new jobs to support these cutting-edge developments.
