How To Present Yourself During A Job Interview

Submitted by agilmour

Your chances of landing a job have less to do with your resume than you may think. In truth, interviewers want to get a broader sense of who you are and by extension, who they can expect to see each day if they hire you. How the interviewer perceives you lies within your power. That's why it's critical that you know how to present yourself during a job interview. They'll be looking at your clothes. But, they'll also be keen to see how much you know and how you communicate that knowledge. These are the qualities that create an image within the mind of your interviewer. Here are some tips to make sure you're presenting yourself in the best possible light...

Know The Company And Its Business

First, you need to do a bit of homework. Research the company and the position for which you're interviewing. Know their business and their objectives. You'll be able to communicate clearly about your understanding of your position's place in the larger picture. Plus, you can speak confidently about the value you'll bring to the position given the company's goals.

Clothes Make The Person

Your clothes undoubtedly communicates your attitude toward yourself and others. Suits (grey or dark blue) nearly always make the right impression. Men should wear a long-sleeved white shirt and tie while women should choose a simple, conservative blouse. Also, men should wear black shoes while women should avoid high heels. Keep jewellery to a minimum. Anything that calls undue attention to itself should be left at home.

Dressing To The Position

Dressing to the position for which you're interviewing is tricky. Many companies have a business casual style of dress in the office. You may be tempted to try fitting into the office work environment by dressing casually. Remember, being more conservative in your clothing during the interview is always a good idea. If the person who is going to interview you arrives dressed casually, you can easily adjust by removing your jacket or loosening your tie.

A Successful Job Interview Presentation

Your goal during the interview is to create a perception within the mind of the person interviewing you. Before you speak a word, they'll likely note the clothing and jewellery you're wearing. Dress conservatively. Also, research the company before you arrive. Your ability to speak intelligently about the business presents you as a knowledgeable candidate. If you present yourself in the right manner, you can build an image that will help ensure that you land the job.
