Increasing Gorgon Gas Oil Jobs as Australia Develops its Natural Gas ResourcesSubmitted by CT-Matketing Mon, 19 Jul 2010
Chevron's Gorgon Project will now extend its reach to the Greater Gorgon gas fields, located around 130 kilometres off the north-west coast of Australia. These gas fields contain an estimated 40 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and will require extensive support and substantial amounts of new equipment and resources to reach its ultimate target.
What is Greater Gorgon? The increase in exploration for natural gas in the area will have its base on Barrow Island. Here, Chevron will install a gas processing facility that will include three Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) trains to transport an estimated 15 million tons of LPG per year. It will also include underwater development of the Gorgon and Jansz gas fields, involving up to 30 subsea pipelines and the use of LNG shipping facilities so that the gas can be transported to international markets. The Greater Gorgon fields comprise five fields in all and have been extensively researched and appraised. Up to 13.8 trillion cubic feet of gas have been confirmed in the Greater Gorgon area alone. Further possible reserves are estimated to take the total to around 21.5 trillion cubic feet. With the investigative phase of the operation complete, the signing of contracts between Chevron, its subsidiaries and associated partners will see the next phase beginning in a relatively short space of time. This will involve staggered subsea development of the Gorgon and Greater Gorgon gas fields. Subsea wells will be tied to a gravity-based platform where the gas will be processed. From here, the gas will be exported, via trunk-line, to an LNG plant in the Burrip Peninsula. This project is thought to yield around 8 million tons of fully-processed LNG per year for the duration of at least five years. Recruiting for the Future The extension of the Gorgon Project and the staggered development of the oil fields will have a phenomenal impact on Australian gas and oil recruitment. As each phase of the oil fields' development is instigated, more and more gas jobs and oil jobs will need to be filled. Not only will these jobs need staffing on the developmental side of the Project, but there will also be a need to find further staff to fill posts at the other end of the pipeline. In addition, because the Project is using cutting edge technology to maximize its efficiency and reduce its impact on the environment, its implementation will see the birth of new jobs that will rely on the developing skills of those in training facilities and further education. The first boom in the Australian job market is anticipated to take place at the end of 2010 and is expected to repeat almost cyclically over the following five years. The oil and gas industry as a whole has shown its mettle in the face of the world's recent economic downturn. This industry was one of the few to retain its staff and freeze wages rather than downsize and force redundancies. As a result, those already a part of the industry can expect to develop their jobs into gas careers and oil careers, leaving room for newcomers as they move further up the ladder.
