Internships and How to Make them Work for YouSubmitted by Stevevolman Thu, 22 Apr 2010
Many young people who are about to complete their formal educations wonder how they can make the most out of an internship. This is a valid question nowadays because today's uncertain economy is requiring students to gain some sort of work experience if they wish to get ahead in a highly competitive job market.
Most employers will tell you that the best way to make the most out of an internship is to use your term as intern to develop good work habits that will help you become a reliable and productive worker. This is a good way to take advantage of internship opportunities because it can help you learn how to recognise the value of good work habits before you enter the workforce. With this thought in mind, here are a few good habits to learn as an intern that can help you make the most of your internship: One good habit to learn as an intern is getting into the habit of organizing your time and resources. Efficiency and productivity are highly valued by most employers because they allow people to maximise their value as a worker. This makes it a good idea to use your time as an intern to learn how to prioritise your time and resources because it will make it easier for you to do this when you enter the workforce. Another good habit to learn as an intern is learning straight away the value of arriving on time for work and dressing appropriately. These habits are valuable for interns to develop straight away because most employers do not tolerate tardiness or a sloppy appearance. Therefore, interns should try to dress appropriately and arrive on time to learn how to value a neat appearance and functionality before they look for their first real job. In addition, another good habit to develop as an intern is the habit of working equally well as part of a group or independently. This is important nowadays because most firms tend to assign roughly equal amounts of work to individuals and groups. As a result, interns should try to split their time evenly working with groups and independently to get used to the idea of working this way. Finally, interns should also try to strive to complete tasks as accurately as possible. This is a great habit for young people to acquire because most employers still value employees who strive to complete projects accurately. This is true because most employers still use accuracy as one of their benchmarks for promotions and employee retention. As a result, interns who want to get ahead in their careers should strive to complete tasks as accurately as possible. As you can see, interns can get the most out of an internship by learning habits that will help them succeed when they formally enter the workforce. Learning these habits may not seem like much. However, they can form the basis for good working habits that can allow young people to succeed at finding a job in a tough job market. As a result, young people should think about how they can get the most out of an internship by developing good work habits early in their careers.
