Job interview tips

Submitted by agilmour

First impressions are an important part of getting the job that you would like. A first impression is one thing in life that you get only one chance at - After the resume, the job interview is the most integral part of the job-seeking process. One should have a professional appearance as well as being prepared for the standard interview questions and maintain a calm and cool composure throughout the meeting.

Always be on time or five to ten minutes early for the job interview. This will demonstrate responsibility and punctuality to the potential employer as well as giving a first good impression.

Attire for the interview should be professional and business like. Even if the job interview is in a casual environment the applicant should still take the time to dress professionally. Large jewellery or items that draw attention should be avoided. Men should avoid jewellery but wedding rings and a metal watch. Women, as well as men should be dressed in a business suit and maintain a professional demeanour throughout the interview.

Look the potential employer in the eye and keep consistent eye contact. Upon meeting the interviewer, and upon leaving be sure to shake the hand of the interview and thank them for their time. It is a nice touch to give a thank you note to the receptionist to be given to the employer thanking them for the opportunity. This added touch could mean the difference of a job offer or not.

At no time during the interview should gum be in the applicants mouth – it is distasteful, and impedes speech and looks unattractive and unprofessional.

Answer questions clearly. It helps to think about the question for a moment before answering, but don’t take too long to think about the answer as this could be off-putting to the employer.

Above all, be honest when answering the questions posed. This will ensure a good impression as good interviewers are always aware when the subject is lying!
