Mystery Shopping

Submitted by Paris Smith

'Mystery Shopping', the name itself is mysterious but it is a very lucrative career option. Mystery shopping is also referred to as secret shopping, performance evaluations, service checks and more. Mystery shopping is actually a tool used by market research companies to measure the quality of services provided by various retailers, and service organizations. In essence it is market research. In the mystery shopping process, mystery shoppers gather information and evaluate the products and services that an organization offers.

Mystery shoppers or secret shoppers behave as any normal customer would, while completing the assigned task of either buying products or simply collecting information about products or services that they have received during the course of shopping. However, the work does not stop here. Mystery shoppers have to provide a detailed report of their observations and experiences.

Mystery shopping is used largely in retail stores, department stores, theatres, restaurants, fast food chains, financial institutions, convenience stores, gas stations, health clubs, and other service providers.

Mystery shopping began in the 1940s and has become very popular since that time. In recent times, the process of managing secret shopper scheduling and the processing of finished secret shopping reports, has largely been transitioned to the internet. Prospective mystery shoppers are now able to register for participation and find mystery shopping jobs online as well.

As mentioned earlier, mystery shopping is a very lucrative career. However, the role of a mystery shopper demands a certain level of responsibility and professionalism. Additionally, mystery shoppers must be able to follow the directions and requirements of a given shopping assignment very closely.

Mystery shopping jobs do not require adherence to a strict eight hour schedule like many typical positions. Often times mystery shoppers are able to manage great flexibility with their mystery shopping schedule throughout the day, with shopping jobs being available at various times of day and night. Mystery shopping jobs are often well suited jobs for students, part-time job seekers, housewives and alike.

Secret shoppers have the opportunity to eat at fine restaurants, be guests at quality hotels, attend movie theatres, make purchases at retail stores, and are paid for their efforts. Mystery shoppers are often paid quite handsomely. The payment is either given as a pre-arranged fee for a particular shop, or is given as a reimbursement for a purchase or sometimes it's a combination of both.

Many consider mystery shopping a great source of secondary income, and/or a great opportunity to net free goods and services. However mystery shopping has tremendous potential to be a primary source of income as well. Sign up today and find your very own mystery shopping assignment.
