Nephrology Nurse Employment Opportunities

Submitted by Simmons
Mon, 31 Aug 2009

This is where nephrology nursing comes into play. The need for nephrology nurses has never been greater. Nephrology merely describes the branch of medicine that deals with issues of the kidneys. Most nephrology nurses deal specifically with patients who are in advanced renal failure and in need of dialysis or other long term care options.

Becoming a nephrology nurse does take some work, but those who complete the training will find that there are many nephrology nurse employment opportunities available. Due to the ever growing demand, it is possible to explore a wide range of nephrology nursing employment, including part time work, full time work, salaried positions at hospitals or hourly wages through clinics or at home services. Though all these types of positions involve the same kind of work, each has a distinct tone.

Working in a hospital as a nephrology nurse would probably be the most impersonal setting. Patients would come and go more often, with less consistency. In this context, nephrology nurses would likely be dealing with patients who have been newly diagnosed with renal difficulties or who are experiencing unusual symptoms. While monitoring patients in the hospital, these nurses would also start to prepare patients to transition back home.

Nephrology clinics would also see a great number of patients, but nurses who work in these settings might expect to see the same patients more consistently for routine checkups. These clinics specially service patients in renal failure so these nurses would be expected to be able to perform basic exams while also being familiar with the procedures and equipment.

The last nephrology nurse employment opportunity is to work as traveling nurse, visiting patients at their homes. This type of position allows for the most one-on-one environment, promoting a relationship between the nurse and patient. Obviously, nurses would have to be able to drive and would need to feel good about operating completely on their own.

Whichever options sounds most appealing, nephrology nurse employment continues to see growth in all of these areas. With great opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and to get to know patients, nephrology nursing may be the perfect employment opportunity for qualified and compassionate nurses.
