nephrology nursingSubmitted by Simmons Thu, 3 Sep 2009
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) implied that by the year 2020 the national demand for professional nurses is expected to swell to close to three million full-time employed registered nurses. If the projected trends continue, HRSA states that approximately 65% of the estimated demand will be met (HRSA, 2004).
People are growing older in the United States. The aging population will need nephrology-related services. Nephrology nurses are decisive to the delivery of high excellence in care to patients suffering from reduced kidney function. The patients with chronic kidney disease are living longer. This is probably because of advances in the level of care distributed to those with other related chronic disease that allow patients to live longer. The need for nephrology-related services and care will increase, along with the requirements for nephrology nursing professionals to give care. Without professional nurses who have proficiency in nephrology, quality effect for patients with kidney disease will not be realized. The registered nursing deficit will overwhelm all professional nurses. American Nephrology Nurses' Association stated that it stays devoted to working with other professional nursing groups to expand policy applications intended to be a magnet for new undergraduates to the nursing profession. Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations published a document titled "Health Care at the Crossroads: Strategies for Addressing the Evolving Nursing Crisis" (Joint Commission, 2002, 2005). The paper implied that by 2010 that the working professional nurse will be 50 years of age, noting that 50 as the standard age. JCAHO continued that the average age for registered nurses is escalating at a pace more than twice that of all other jobs in the country. Council of Nephrology Nurses and Technicians of the National Kidney Foundation put out a Renal Care Facts Sheet stating that nephrology nursing has developed into a scientifically advanced field of professional nursing that requires technical as well as clinical proficiency to provide care for patients with chronic kidney disease. The requirement for nephrology nurses will just continue to develop as the number of patients with chronic kidney disease is expected to reach over 650,000 by the year 2010. Nephrology nurses occupations are found in work place settings from bedside to the big business side.
