Professional Networking Website UsageSubmitted by urlreader Wed, 19 Nov 2008
There are a number of things that you can do on the Internet. You can surf about aimlessly, you can do targeted research, access information from all around the world, watch movies, listen to music, rant and rave on any number of forums or blogging sites, make friends, network for social or career related purposes, and so on. That last item on the list is the one that you should be focusing on right now. Making use of professional networking sites to increase your business contacts, make new contacts, stay up to date on changes within your field, and so on, is a great way to utilize the Internet to your benefit.
In today's world, there isn't much that isn't online. You can renew your library books, purchase a washer and dryer, apply for a job, and even telecommute to your job on a daily basis. All in all, it is a pretty great way to make sure that you are keeping up with the times. Not much happens in the world that the Internet (or those on it) don't know about. If you work in a media field, it's even more essential to have a presence. Of course, the Internet IS a medium these days. No longer are television, print, radio and film standing alone. Not only will all of these other media have an online presence (think CNN.com, NYTimes.com, etc) but there are even Internet-only news sources. You could get a job as a weather forecaster and be online for the entirety of your career, if that's what you wanted. If you haven't visited a professional/ social networking website before, you may not be familiar with how they work. The basic premise behind the majority of sites out there is that individuals or companies sign up and create a profile for themselves. Your username should be one that creates a recognizable name for yourself- you don't want to sign up as Jimmy579 if you want people to recognize you for your company, which happens to be named Sandworks Lighting. You want to look for a professional networking website that also allows you to upload media, such as pictures, audio, video, etc. In essence, you create a resume for yourself in this online arena. Now, if you are looking to gain employment through such a venture, this is especially important; likewise, if you are hoping to attract employees to your company, you want to show someone exactly why you are a desirable employer. Professional networking sites are also a great way to keep up with what's going on- something that can be fun as well as informative. About the Author
