Pursuing career as an Online Teacher

Submitted by emmarobert

The online method of education is getting more popular as we increase our dependence on computers and technology in general. No longer is the educational system confined to classrooms of brick walls where students have to relocate if they do not have access to quality education in their local environment. As a result, a vibrant economy has developed to meet this need for distance education and has provided many teaching opportunities for online teachers from all subject areas. These teachers can be both fulltime of part time depending on their subject area and employer.

Responsibilities of Online Teachers

Online teachers are charged with the responsibility of facilitating the success of the students under their charge in accordance with the course objective and standards. This requires the instructor to be highly knowledgeable in their field to be able to answer any possible scenario or question posed to them by students. This support must be provided to students by all appropriate means if not directly, then by suggesting support material available online. This response must be given to students within one business day. Other events such as assignments should be within two business days.

Duties of Online Teachers

The specific duties of online teachers will vary based on the subject area. However, all online teachers have some basic duties that they must perform. These include:
* Carefully follow course outline when teaching courses
* Apply motivational techniques in all aspects of the educational process to bring the best out of the students.
* Maintain a professional relationship with students through positive online discussions
* Respond to enquiries in a prompt and professional manner
* Keep a correspondence of each student's participation, course grades and other evaluation mechanisms
* Keep up with the latest online teaching techniques in an effort to improve the standard of teaching delivered to students.

Minimum Qualification for Online Teachers

Each subject area and level of educational program dictates the exact qualification for an online teacher. However, all must still have some basic requirements that encompass all facets of online teaching. These include:
* Previous on present classroom experience
* At least a bachelor degree or equivalent certification in their area of specialization
* Excellent communication skills
* Ability to utilize analytical, motivational and other social skills to bring out the best in students
* Excellent knowledge of information technology including internet use, word processing software programs, web browsers and communication mechanisms via the internet

Benefits of Online Teaching
More and more teachers are turning to online teaching because of the many benefits than can be derived from the profession. Every online teacher you meet will tell you about a different positive aspect of learning online. Surveys show that most online teachers are attracted by:
* The ability to perform their teaching duties at times of their convenience. This allows for working professions to teach online as a second job without affecting their normal schedule.
* The ability to interact with students of varying background without having to relocate
* The relatively small class size when compared to traditional educational institutions. This gives online teachers the ability to interact more with students.
* The support given by industry players to online institutions with respect to educational material about their products and the best practices about their respective business. This allows online teachers to design their online courses around what is functionally needed by industries and not just hypothetical or information that is offered in some traditional schools.
