Many of us occupy jobs that offer no risk other than falling over or spilling hot tea into our laps. For some people accident compensation claims are a way to ensure an employer improves their health and safety policy so that others do not fall foul of the same plight. Yet many people in the UK do jobs that can be highly dangerous and often have a high fatality rate. Many people take health and safety in the workplace for granted yet many others do not have the luxury of health and safety's rules and regulations to make their working environment a safer place to be.
Each year in the UK over 250,000 people injure themselves in the workplace and an estimated 240 of those accidents will prove to be fatal. Yearly figures indicate that approximately 6,000 of those deaths are caused by cancer which was brought on by exposure to asbestos, which has more of a long term effect on the health. So what other jobs is there in the UK that can be fatal to those who undertake such a life threatening career? Here we highlight a few of the most dangerous jobs and the risks that these brave individuals undertake in order to gain a wage. Fishermen First on our list is the job of the fisherman or sea merchant. Many people in the UK using fishing as their hobbies and is often thought of as a relaxing sport to partake in. Yet fishing on a larger scale offers risks that are not even considered when sitting on a bank waiting for a bite. Having to brave all elements to get their quota this job is highly dangerous. The statistics indicate that fisherman are 50 times more likely to be killed compared to those in other jobs. It is believed that 103 per 100,000 fisherman die whilst working, yet compared to the figures in 1885 which show that 1 in 63 died each year whilst working out at sea. Bomb Disposal Expert The job of a bomb disposal expert has a high fatality rate as this is a job dealing directly with devices that have been designed and built to kill people. If that wasn't enough you also have to consider that these devices are situated in countries and locations that position a sniper to shoot you given half the chance. If people are looking for a job with a high risk factor whilst having to dodge bullets flying past their heads then this could be a career opportunity for you.
