Writing a good cover letter

Submitted by agilmour
Thu, 15 May 2008

A good cover letter combined with a good resume is the key to finding a successful job, and landing a great interview. The cover letter is the face of the resume and should outline quickly and efficiently the pertinent information. It takes the chance to add polish to a resume and create that professional appearance.

What is the purpose of a good cover letter? A good cover serves the purpose of introducing the resume to the employer. It serves as the purpose as a cover letter for the fax and enables privacy if the resume is being faxed to the employer.

The cover letter should outline the position applied for and give reasons why the applicant is perfect for the position. It could include the past position and how it applies to the new position. It should also detail when the applicant is able to begin the position, hours available and a strong introductory paragraph that gives the employer an idea of who the applicant really is. There should be something in the cover letter than sets the applicant apart from others – this is a very important fact.

There are certain aspects of writing a good cover letter. The cover letter should be n the same type size and font as the resume as well as including the same stylized aspects. It is acceptable for the cover letter to be stapled to the resume, with a straight staple in the upper-left hand corner of the page.

The cover letter should include up-to-date contact information so the employer can contact the potential applicant for the position. It should include phone number and address information as well as the full name of the individual.

The cover letter may include a thank-you in advance. This thank you could serve as a courteous gesture and show the tact of the applicant. It could result in a new job for the applicant!
