Cleaning Equipment Burnishers

Submitted by madiso10

Upon entering a large facility such as a department store, school or hotel a clean glossy floor can make the environment feel cleaner, larger and even healthier. Flooring in a commercial building can send a statement to employees, clients and customers. To achieve a perfect, glossy and almost mirror like floor takes experience, hard work and the right cleaning equipment. To achieve beautiful looking floor you need to utilize two types of cleaning equipment. The first piece of cleaning equipment is an auto scrubber. An auto scrubber is used to clean debris and soil from the floor so that the floor can be burnished. The second piece of cleaning equipment is a commercial burnisher. A burnisher spins a polish pad at speeds of over 1500 revolutions per minute in turn heating up the top layer of floor finish which can produce a mirror like shine.

There are two main types of burnishers; swing burnishers and walk behind burnishers. Swing type burnishers come in two different styles, wheel carriage and not wheel carriage. Wheel carriage burnishers have a rotating disc and two wheels in the back and are pushed in a forward motion. As the burnisher moves forward the polishing disc polishes the floor. These types of burnishers are easy to control and are great for regular floor maintenance. The second type of swing burnisher has no wheels and floats on the polishing disc. The types of burnishers can be used in a side to side or back a forth motion. The floating burnisher is sometimes hard to control and takes more elbow grease to get the job done. Walk behind burnishers are larger units that are used to polish large areas. These burnishers are machines that are self propelled or pushed and resemble an auto scrubber in appearance.

Swing type burnishers are the perfect piece of cleaning equipment for small jobs and polishing fresh floor finish or wax. These types of burnishers are extremely maneuverable and can squeeze into tight areas. The disc on most swing type burnishers measures between thirteen and twenty inches. Swing burnishers commonly spin at speeds for 1500rpms to 3000rpms which is ample speed to heat the floor finish producing an appealing shine. Swing burnishers are comprised of three parts, the pad driver, base and handle. The pad driver secures the polishing pad to the machine even at high speeds. The base of the machine houses an electric motor usually ranging from one to three horsepower. The handle allows the user to control the machine and is also used as a holder for the power cord when the machine is not in use.

Walk behind burnishers are used to burnish large areas of flooring quickly. Walk behind burnishers are commonly powered by electric wall outlets, propane and battery power. These types of cleaning equipment cost more than swing burnishers and range from two thousand dollars all the way up to twenty thousand dollars. Although the cost of these machines is higher they are very efficient and can decrease labor costs dramatically. Electric outlet burnishers are powered by a cord which is plugged into a wall outlet. These types of burnishers are limited in range by the length of the electric cord. Battery burnishers are powered by deep cell batteries and are usually run on either 24 or 36 volts of electricity. These batteries can weigh hundreds of pounds requiring the use of a propulsion system to move the machine along. Propane burnishers are the most powerful burnishers. Propane burnishers run on propane fuel that powers an engine which in turn powers the disc system. These types of burnishers were popular in the eighties and nineties but have recently declined in use due emissions polluting indoor air quality.
