If you're buying a PA system for the first time, you might want to consider the following tips to ensure that you get a PA system that is right for you:
• If we look at all the input sources such as microphones, musical instruments, CD players, etc. as a complete topic to be addressed separately, the first part of the audio chain is the mixer. You need to decide on the total number of inputs you'll need and the degree of control you want over each channel e.g. tone control or special effects. This will dictate the size, format and ultimately, the price of your mixer. Always make sure that you allow for possible future expansion of your PA system.
• All PA systems feature an audio amplifier which can be built into a mixer amplifier or exist as a separate product known as a power amplifier. Power amplifiers tend to have higher levels of output power. Check that the amplifier is compatible with the PA system speakers you intend to purchase. An under-powered PA system can sound just as bad as an over-powered PA system.
• Then you move on to the crucial part of a PA system- the loudspeakers. It is vital to identify the number of speakers and the amount of power you need for your PA system. You can do this by determining the type of location you'll use it in, the size of the room and how many people there will be in the audience.
• Finally, after checking all the parts, don't forget that you must invest in high quality cables that will stand regular everyday use. There is little point in having a great PA system if the interconnecting cables let you down at the crucial moment.
Now that you're familiar with the basic component of PA systems, the next thing that you need to do is shop around for good quality PA systems. And believe me, there are dozens of choices available in the market. You just need to work around your budget and from there, examine each PA system products based on the tips mentioned above.
There is no such thing as standard PA system. Choose a PA system that will, as discussed earlier best suits your needs i.e. indoor or outdoor events and size of the audience. This way, you can fully utilise the use of your PA system and enjoy the benefits of having a good quality one.
