Credit Card ReadersSubmitted by paynetsystems Wed, 2 Aug 2006
Any merchant who accepts credit cards needs to be familiar with credit card readers. Credit card readers are devices that allow a business to safely and efficiently process credit cards. Readers decrypt the information contained on a card's magnetic strip, and use it to verify the card's authenticity. The credit card reader works in conjunction with the store's credit card terminal to access the card provider's database in order to determine whether the card should be accepted.
While credit card readers have been the standard in retail outlets for years, new advances are bringing the same convenience into the home. Some companies now manufacture credit card readers that can be installed directly to a computer, allowing customers to merely swipe their card's magnetic strip through the reader each time they want to make a purchase. Other companies have developed card readers for cell phones, allowing a user to swipe their card when making a payment by phone. There are two basic options if you are going to accept credit cards. The first thing that you can do is to purchase your own card reader. These magnetic stripe readers are not particularly expensive. However, you will not be able to differentiate between credit and debit cards. Therefore, if you get customers who use a debit card, you will have to treat it like a credit card. This just results in a little more time for the customer as he or she will have to sign the receipt. Another option is that you can rent a card reader. Some companies do this now. While it will probably be cheaper than buying your own card reader and you may even get a touch pad so that your customer can input his or her debit card pin number, you may have to charge a small transaction fee every time a card is used in order to pay the rental costs. Whether you buy or rent a credit card reader, you should find some way to have one in your business. Personal credit card readers, such as those now found in computers and cell phones, have a variety of benefits for both merchants and shoppers. The ease of swiping a card through a reader, as opposed to filling out a secured form in a web browser, may inspire new customers to shop online who might not otherwise do so fees from unauthorized purchases.
