The Importance Of Letters In Modern Day CommunicationsSubmitted by Timothy Gomez Thu, 25 Jun 2009
In the past, writing a letter is one of the many ways that overseas Filipino workers or OFWs communicate with their loved ones back in the Philippines. Though the use of telephone is available, sending Letters to the Philippines is considered more economical. The only drawback in sending a letter is the amount of time that an individual have to wait before they can receive a letter, typically taking 4 days. Nowadays, sending a letter has become a distant past now that emails (electronic mail) provided a faster, free, and convenient way for people to communicate with their loved ones through using the internet.
The internet has truly been a major help in the growth of the communication industry in almost every country. OFWs can now send Letters to the Philippines not through post offices, but through emails which would only take seconds before it arrives. But aside from emails, the use of messenging systems such as Yahoo! Messenger, AIM, and Windows Live, have provided live communication between two or more people by use of online chatting or calling (which is usually free). Because of the huge convenience that the internet have provided people, sending letter became rarer as the years go by. Aside from the internet, the use of roaming cellphones in wireless telecommunication made it cheaper for OFWs to call their families in the Philippines. Because of the new technologies used for communications, sending letters became rarer and unpopular which is why post companies all over the country and the world begun to decline. But there are several advantages of sending some Letters to the Philippines than the use of these technologies. Letters are still used, particularly by legal offices, companies, official notifications and sometimes advertisers. This is because of three main advantages: * No special devices required. This is because everybody has a home, which means that they are easy to reach. A mailbox is all that the intended recipient needs. Not unlike e-mail or phone calls where the intended recipient needs access to a computer and a telephone respectively. * A physical record or evidence. Sending letters are still used as a way for people to send important documents or letters that could serve as evidence to a conversation that can be kept securely. * Unlike e-mails, where the recipient needs an individual e-mail address to receive messages, addresses are not chosen (per se), and so with the help of a postal service, delivering an advertisement to all homes in a particular area is not hard.
