Do Your Prospects Have a "Crush" on You?

Submitted by kimduke
Tue, 3 Feb 2009

My cutie-pie (and very funny) 10 year old niece told me something yesterday.
With a big smile on her face she announced:
"Auntie, 2 boys in my class have a crush on me. Billy and Jessie. They are both very nice (get ready for this part)...but I have to be SURE that I like them too."
You probably would have laughed at the look on my face at that moment!
I was thinking...
"A 10-year old girl has the confidence to NOT have a crush BACK -
just because someone likes her."

I love it!
Which of course reminded me of YOU.
Do Your Prospects Have A "Crush" On You?
Here's the deal lady.
When sales are sluggish it can be very easy to drop your "customer filter" and start taking any old business that knocks on the door. Sometimes those prospects want to pay you far less than you're worth - and sometimes those prospects are just not the right fit (but you're tempted to take the biz anyway).
Because this can very dangerous to your profit margins, time, energy and possible frustration levels - let me give you a Sales Diva warning.

You Have The Right To Turn Down A Crush
Yep.
Don't start chewing your lip from anxiety and then turn into a lazy salesperson. What's lazy? Dropping your rates like crazy and accepting any business that comes to you.
Be choosy who you accept as clients. Now more than ever you want the clients who aren't just there as "crush" but who have long-term potential.

Now Back To My Cutie-Pie Niece
So I replied:
"Hmmm - well I think you're right. Just because someone likes you doesn't mean you have to like them automatically. Did you make a decision?"
She said:
"Yeah - Billy offered to buy me a milk.
But Jessie makes me laugh really hard- so I think I like him better."

If a 10 year old can be discerning with her "crushes" I think you can too - don't you??
So there.
