Dos and Don'ts of Internet Marketing

Businesses everywhere are starting to take advantage of Internet marketing. It is almost to the point now where if you find a business that doesn't have a website or you can't find it online, you become confused. It may even effect your decision to go there because you couldn't find information online about it. With that said it is nearly imperative for most businesses to take advantage of Internet marketing. But, before you jump in and start formulating ads and websites for your business, you will need to know the dos and don'ts of Internet marketing. These few tips could help you avoid making the bigger mistakes many make in Internet marketing and could also help you create an effective marketing engine for your business.

One of the things that you should definitely take advantage of and do with your Internet marketing campaign is making sure that you domain name is short and easy to remember. When they start to get long or complicated, no matter how cool you think it is, trash it. The domain name isn't set up for you and the people that work for you, it is set up for your customers and if they can't remember it, you won't have any. This may seem like common sense, but it is amazing how many businesses violate this rule and can never take full advantage of the Internet.

Other things that will help your Internet marketing would be in connection to what is on your website. These sites, while they should be attractive, need to be simple. Anything to elaborate will take a long time to load and people will start to avoid going to it. Also you will want to make it interactive is some way. Some great ideas are polls or feedback forums. These will not only give you information from your potential customers, but it give the customer something to do while they are on your website. Blogs would be another option for you to create an interactive website as well. People always love to be the first to know things, and having a blog for different ideas that you are working on or even reactions to things going on in the world make your company more relatable. This will also allow people to interact with people at your business.

Those are just a few things that you take advantage of, but sometimes more importantly, there are things that you should completely avoid. One of the biggest ones is forcing people to sign up or create a user name to see a website. While this was thought of as a great way to obtain email addresses and customer information, studies have shown that this actually deters more people from the site.

Another common problem that shouldn't be happening is business that begins to advertise their websites before they are finished. This will cause you to lose more customers as well. While the idea behind it is that people will know the site and continually check back until the site is finished, it actually doesn't work that way. Once they try one time and it doesn't work, they will rarely try again. And what is worse, they will tell other not to try as well.

Your final "don't" for Internet marketing is related to the information on the website. Make sure that everything is short and to the point. No one wants to sit and read long emails or website information. Stuff too much information on one page will definitely push people away. If you need a lot of information, put it in short bits on different pages under more specific headings. This method will lead your customers further into the website, rather than out of it.
