How to Profit from What You Know

Submitted by ledsuccess11

People search high and low trying to find ways to make more money or move up in their company. Often times they will read books, do more work and attend seminars to advance their careers. While these are all great things and more people should do them, it means nothing if you don't ever use what you know. Using what you know can help you advance in companies, be successful in your own company and simply make you a more intelligent individual. Soon your peers, as well as your superiors, in your business will take notice and you will be in the spotlight for the next promotion. The problem is, you may not know how to profit from what you know.

The first step in taking advantage of what you know, is to determine what you know. Most people think that they don't know very much about much of anything, when in reality almost everyone is an 'expert' on something. Everyone knows more than they think they do. So take some time, sit down and write out some of the things that you know or understand better than most of your peers. Even if you aren't sure if you know more than them, write it down. Often times it is the person that takes advantage of that knowledge first that reaps the rewards from it.

Your next step is to increase the knowledge and begin to think outside the box. Even if you know everything there is to know about a topic, it doesn't mean that you are looking at things the right way. Start reading and attending conferences about your particular areas of knowledge. The seminars may not increase you knowledge about any given topic, but may allow you to apply it to more areas of your business than you ever thought possible. Almost any area of expertise can be used in almost any business but realizing that and taking advantage of it are the areas that most people miss.

Your final step in profiting and taking advantage of what you know is to think big. This includes going above and beyond what you normally do at work. Think up projects that could make a difference in your workplace and share them with supervisors. Even if it is something simple and has more to do with the people you work with and not the people you work for, ideas show that you can think on your own and keep you in the forefront of your supervisor's mind. That is the place that you want to be when promotion and/or raise time comes around.

These tips are easy to do and can be done by anyone willing to do the little bit of extra work it requires. Seminars and meeting will help you grow and possibly show you how much you already know. They will teach you how to apply them and give you ideas of your own. It takes so little to be above average in the world today, so take advantage of that and allow yourself to grow and think on your own and you will become an irreplaceable part of your workplace.
