With the internet becoming more accessible to many people in recent years, investors have taken notice of the potential of the new medium for doing business. Luckily, you too can actually exploit the internet to suit your own business needs. And if you think that you need to put out a large amount of money to start the business, you are very wrong.

In fact, you actually need just a small amount of cash and some guts to start your business on the web which can be done with the use of strategic planning and management . But before going on, many people are still asking: why take to the net? The main reason is that it is much easier to set up and maintain your business. You don't have to build anything or hire anyone to conduct your business. And you can take your business anywhere, as long as you find an internet connection. And you can also get to reach more people, even those out of the country.

So what do you need to be able to start your business? Definitely, you need a computer. You need only a single unit as a start and you can either choose a desktop or a laptop, depending on whether you will be moving a lot or not.

Also, the features of the computer that you are going to purchase. If you are going to use it mostly to write and send transaction, you will have to settle for the lower cost entry level units. These already have basic functions like document writing and sending an email. You can upgrade them later to suit your needs. On the other hand, if you are doing specialized work like photo and video editing, you will have to go for the higher end ones. They may be a bit pricier, but they have features that will suit the work much better. You will also need to buy special equipment to use on the computer like scanners, printers and graphics tablets.

For the needed internet connection, many internet service providers offer access at very affordable prices. Check out the speeds that they have, as these is very important. The rule is the faster, the better, though you will have to shell out more for higher speeds. If you are going to work at home, better get a DSL connection. Opt for wi-fi capabilities (and a laptop) if you are going to be on the go most of the time.

And of course, you have to think about the things that you are going to sell online. There are actually many things that you can sell online, from toys, gadgets and books, even down to food. One thing to note when selling physical goods is that you will have to deliver them to your customers. This can be done either through meet-ups or by sending it through the post, especially useful for faraway customers.

Another internet business that is quite popular nowadays is accepting commissions. Commissions are works that you do as requested by customers in exchange for money. Commissions can be anything from artworks to articles to video. Even the task of translating Manga (Japanese comics) is somewhat very lucrative over the net.

Once you have set up your business, it's now time to wait for your first customers. It might take a little longer than what you want, but once they come in, your work will definitely begin.
