Cold-calling is the way that a lot of salespeople get their start. Those that cold-call get a list of names and numbers and call people that they do not know in the hope that they will be able to sell them a product or service. These people have not asked a salesperson to call them, and often the company has little to no information about them. Only a few of these solicited individuals will have any interest in what the salesperson is trying to sell to them. Those that are interested, though, might bring in revenue for the company and the salesperson by becoming customers and buying products or services.
New salespeople can be very nervous when it comes to contacting strangers. They need to find ways that they can use to get over their fright and worries. Often, a lot of time and effort goes into finding ways to conquer their fears. Specific ideas can be used to help these people be less fearful. Practicing their sales pitch over the phone, in front of a mirror, or in front of a group can be helpful. This gives them a higher comfort level and helps them appear more natural, while also giving them a lower chance of forgetting what they are supposed to say. Deep breathing, calming exercises, and meditation are other techniques that salespeople can use to be less fearful when the cold-call. These techniques work well for those that are comfortable doing them. Even while on the phone, deep breathing can be practiced. Normal routines can be carried out while breathing in this way. This should not create any kind of concern, because a lot of people do not pay any attention to the breathing patterns of other people.
