Know Your Money Making Keywords

Submitted by elmgator

Optimizing your keywords is the single most important thing that you can do to improve your rankings with the major search engines. Every decision that you make about building, marketing, and adding content to your website should be based upon ensuring that your keywords are effectively promoted. While online marketing shares many aspects with offline marketing, the search-oriented nature of the medium results in some unique features that offline marketers do not have to worry about. Researching effective keywords and optimizing your site around those keywords are the two most important parts of increasing the exposure that your webiste will receive.

If you're launching a web-based business, keyword research is one of the most vital and important projects. Therefore, it should be monitored and supervised meticulously. It doesn't matter whether you choose to do it yourself or to hire outside employees for Internet marketing purposes""you need to be thoroughly engaged in keyword research. The key to your success is identifying the search terms customers will use. You might think that you already anticipate all the keywords people will use to search for your business, but there are lots of possibilities that you haven't thought of yet. What's more, you won't know the competition for any give keyword phrase without researching it. Without thorough, sturdy keyword research, you are virtually dooming a potentially successful web business.

Have a clear idea of precisely what products and/or services you want to market before you start. You should also be able to envision who would be interested in your anticipated products and services. People who skip this step discover that while they generate a lot of traffic, little of it converts to sales. Time and money are wasted. Now that you know what you're selling and to whom you'll be promoting it, compile a list of keywords. Using Google' free keyword tool is a great way to get started with this step.

Now that you've collected a list of primary keywords, start thinking of ways to extend your list. Take the handful of primary keywords you've just created, and try expanding them into various short phrases of two to five words each. This process is known as keyword optimization. Once you're done with your list, take a look out there and try to find out how much competition there is for your specific keyword phrases. Start off with a few less competitive terms, rather than compete for the toughest-to-get ones right off the bat. You'll find that it's really helpful to enlist the help of software programs""or a hired person""that will direct you through online paid keywords research sites. Some business owners don't have the time or interest in becoming web experts, so it's up to you whether you take the time to learn it yourself or hire someone to do it for you.

So you have all these keywords now, so what do you do with them? The keywords are used for all aspects of your internet marketing. You initially use them to plan the content and structure of your site. You want to have pages on your site who's content is targeted at your primary list of keywords. You want to use links in your site that reflect the keyword terms of interest to you. After you have planned your site around the keywords it is now time to use them outside your site to drive traffic to your site. If you are using paid search advertising, such as Google Adwords, this list will guide your advertising strategy and budget. If you are going for top listings in the natural search results, the list will guide all your efforts to improve your rankings in the search engines. No matter how you intend to promote your site, you must make keyword research your first priority.
