Social network sites and Korean culture

Submitted by Michale Song

Most people miss out on the golden opportunities provided to them via social networking sites. Most of them think that it is a place where one can just find a few friends and where they chat with each other for some time or maybe use some applications available on the portal. Some of them join the site, use it for a few days and then forget about it altogether. They do not realize the potential of such sites as far as learning languages and cultures of other countries is concerned. If you are planning to visit Korea on a pleasure or business trip, you owe it to yourself to learn about the culture of that country and the best way to do so is through a native of that country.

Just check out the social networks and you will find many Korean members. Why not spend some time searching for a few who are of your age and have hobbies similar to that of yours. If you are lucky, you might even find some who are interested in learning about the culture of your country. You can become their friends and exchange details about your respective cultures. You can teach them about the cultures of your country whereas they can teach you more about Korean culture. Each country have their own specific culture and it pays to learn about it prior to visiting that country. Even if you are not going to visit that country, it does not harm to learn about their culture.

You will be amazed to know how many new pieces of information you can pick up about the other country's culture by chatting and exchanging mails with people of that country. You have been driving a car manufactured by a Korean country and love it very much. Have you ever wondered about the logo of that car and about its name? Most such names are associated with the culture of the country they originate in and tell the interested person lots of details. Apart from friendship, you will also find many sites on the Internet that specialize in Korean culture and you can visit such sites and even subscribe to their newsletters to keep yourself updated of the latest cultural functions of Korea.

This apart, you can also keep in touch with your local Korean consulate or embassy and request them to provide you with more details about their country. These consulates and embassies also have a well stocked library where you will find books that will enrich your knowledge about Korean culture. You can find out about the do's and don'ts when you visit that country. All said and done, there is nothing to having a friend from Korea who can guide you best to Korean culture. You can talk with them using messenger programs and also through VoIP programs. Within a few months you will know more about Korean culture than the general tourist does. It will surprise your guest in Korea when you greet them in the traditional way.
