Understanding Data Mining

Submitted by MANEET PURI
Tue, 4 May 2010

The basic process of data mining involves extracting important and relevant information from a huge pool of raw data. There are several data mining tools that help in analyzing data from different viewpoints and summarizing it such that it forms an easily readable volume of data.

With the advent of technology and internet age, the data mining tools have been transformed into computer based applications. This not only handles the ever-increasing volume of data on the internet but also fastens up the overall process. They are also known as ‘knowledge discovery tools.'

The concept of data mining is not a new one. Rather, it has a very old history. Only, in the past manual tools and processes were used to scrape off important information which has now given way to computerized processes. Now there are several analytical software tools and bigger storage grounds that enable potentially huge amounts of data to be preserved easily. All these tools have helped to enhance the quality and accuracy of analysis in addition to speeding up the data mining operations. Also, because of less manual labor and more of automated tools, the costs of operation have decreased tremendously.

Here are the various steps of data mining process:

• First, the concerned data is pulled out from the source, converted and loaded onto a data warehouse system.
• The data is then collected and handled through a database
• Then, the data mining professionals sit to work and retrieve relevant data
• The data is thoroughly scanned and analyzed accordingly
• And finally it is presented in a format that is easily understandable and used for further decision making.

Data mining operations scan the data from different standpoints and perspectives and explore correlations, associations and trends within it. These analyses are made on the following basis:

• Associations- Data mining processes identify simple relationships between the various parts of the database.
• Clusters- Various correlations are made and the collected data is categorized accordingly
• Classes- Certain predefined groups are drafted out and the data is filtered through it so as every group has some amount of relevant data
• Sequential patterns- This method allows to identify several trends in the database and predict behavioral changes

Almost all industries make use of data mining services, be it retail, financial sector entertainment, hospitality or even medical & healthcare industry. Basically any company or organizations that cater to a large audience can make use of data mining services and profit from it. Not only go they get fast answers to their problems but by knowing crucial information about their customers, they can work towards serving better services and hence expand their business. Important business strategies are formulated and successful decisions are taken based on the facts and figures presented by the data mining services.

Data mining tools are an invaluable asset to the company that helps take effective business decisions formulate advertising strategies and plan discount offers.
