You may have heard or seen the ads on the radio or TV about steel buildings and thought: I wonder who buys those things? They're a great way for anyone who wants a place to store their automobile, heavy machinery, or weekend toys, and there are as many different types and styles of buildings available as there are uses for them.

A very common type of metal structure is the carport. These versatile car storage structures are made of steel and are available in a number of different sizes. All you need to have in place to install one a concrete slab or level ground to put it on and you're in business. Many metal building manufacturers will even deliver and install a carport or other metal building for free or as part of the purchase price.

A carport which will accommodate a single car is generally around 12 feet wide, 21 feet long and about five feet tall. A carport that for two vehicles will be about 18 feet wide. Different roof and eave designs can be ordered for metal carports or any other type of steel building to suit your specific needs, along with a choice of steel gauge, usually 12 or 14. The lower the number of gauge, the stronger the steel is, but also the higher the cost, making 14 guage a more cost efficient option than 12. Sometimes roof materials are a lighter guage of steel, such as 29 gauge."

Some metal carports can be customized with vertical roof panels which run from the peak side of the carport to aid with drainage. These are recommended for areas that see high levels of rain or snowfall. Other customization options include gable ends for the front, back, or both ends of the carport, which add to the aesthetic value of the metal structure. This is nice if the carport is in a highly visible area. Sides can be put on carports too. This helps to protect you and your car from the wind and weather. Most steel structure companies can also anchor your carport with mobile home anchors or concrete anchors to add stability and safety.

Garages can also be ordered from metal building companies. The sizes for single and double wide garages are the same as for carports. Singles are 12 foot, doubles 18 foot, and longer widths are available, such as 26 foot for three or more cars. Metal garages are usually free standing, with the weight of the structure displacing onto the side legs, offering plenty of room inside. Like the carports, different gauges of steel are available for the roofing. Customization of the sides and gables of garages are also an option. Roof design is also flexible. Garages can come with rolled corners or in an A-frame design with a boxed eave.

If a garage just isn't large enough to accommodate your storage needs, or if you're a farmer looking to buy steel buildings, a steel barn may be just what you're looking for. Metal agricultural buildings are available in a number of different sizes. Metal barns usually consist of a center section with lean-to's on either or both sides. The sides can construct to be open, enclosed, or both. There is a great deal of customization options available with metal barns, similar to the carport or garage.

These options include the gauge of steel desired (usually 12 or 14 again) with roofs, eaves, sides and other design factors open to flexibility. And if a barn just isn't large enough, metal buildings of up to 40, 50, and 60 feet wide, and up to 20 feet tall can hold just about anything. These larger metal buildings are open in the center with the weight of the structure distributed to the sides like the garages, offering plenty of storage or parking space.

No matter which steel structure you choose to purchase, be sure to work with a company that can give you a detailed quote, answer all of your questions, and customize your metal structure to suit your individual needs. There are plenty to choose from.
