LEADING medical staff and pioneering treatments are to be brought under one roof, thanks to a new Tyneside hospital for youngsters.

Now Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has launched a campaign inviting the public to choose a name for the new facility.

Newcastle Hospitals has been serving the community for more than 250 years and generations of children have been born at the Royal Victoria Infirmary site, with around 6,500 births each year.

It has been awarded CNST Level Three status for two consecutive years – the highest level achieved by any maternity unit in the UK.

The new hospital will be the first time the region has seen all of its children’s services, staff and treatments under one roof – providing everything a sick child may need in one central hub.

A shortlist of three names has now been drawn up and it is now up to the public to cast their vote via the website www.hospitalvote.co.uk or by text message or post.

Voters are also urged to make donations via the same website to the North East regional charity, The Children's Foundation.

Donations will be used to fund a range of services from special interactive therapies to play schemes including the continuation of the popular Clown Doctors programme.

The new facility is designed to allow children and their families to feel more at ease at an often emotionally stressful and tiring time.

Bedrooms will let in lots of light while coloured curved corridors will eradicate the feeling of long, austere walkways.

The hospital will be able to accommodate 245 children as in-patients, with many of the bedrooms for single occupancy with en-suite bathrooms and guest beds for parents.

The hospital now needs your help to pick a new name from the list below:

The Greenhouse Children’s Hospital, backed by Sunderland-born TV Presenter Lauren Laverne, which expresses not only the striking green copper exterior of the new building, but also its nurturing environment.

Northern Lights Children’s Hospital, supported by Newcastle-born Donna Air, which signifies not only the light and bright colours that will flow through the new building, but also the ray of light and hope that children bring to our lives.

The Great North Children’s Hospital, championed by Teesside’s Dame Tanni Grey Thompson, capturing the magnitude of the hospital as a beacon of pride for people of the North East to celebrate and call their own.

To vote for a name for the new children’s hospital, visit www.hospitalvote.co.uk or text the word HOSPITAL to 60999, followed by the keyword of your favourite suggestion:

LIGHTS – Northern Lights Children’s Hospital.

GREAT – Great North Children’s Hospital.

GREENHOUSE – The Greenhouse Children’s Hospital.

For example, to vote for The Great North Children’s Hospital, text HOSPITAL GREAT to 60999.

Or put your choice on a postcard and send it to: PO Box 2YB, Queen Victoria Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE99 2YB.

All texts are charged at your standard network rate. Voting closes at midnight on Wednesday, July 2.

Votes received after this time online, via text or post will not be counted, but texts will still be charged.
